Together...

I had never discipled anyone in my life. I was 21 years old and had been a believer in Christ as my Savior for about 8 years. During those 8 years I never had anyone take the time to disciple me in any way either. In fact, I didn't know such a thing existed. But there I was at a point in my life where I knew it was time to invest in someone else. I had learned just enough to understand the principle of discipleship.

So... the burden was in my heart, but I was as nervous as a turkey in November. Me? Disciple someone? Really? But here's the key. And I take no credit for the idea. Someone else told me, "Karl, all you need is a short head start. And then just stay ahead." How much more simple could it be? It's just a matter of commitment to stay at it and stay ahead a bit. Look at what we already have available to us. We have the infallible Word of God. We have the person and work of the Holy Spirit. We have fellow believers who are in many cases just a few steps ahead of us and in some cases years and years ahead! We have multiple resources available to us. All we need to do is commit to the cause. It's going to take time. It's going to take study. It's going to take prayer and humility. I learned early on to be honest enough to say, "I don't know," on some things and to try and be disciplined enough to find out by the next time we met.

Way back in 19 nunya... (19 nunya business) when I was that 21 year-old kid I stumbled across the book, Disciples are Made, Not Born by Walt Henrichsen. Great little book for just staying ahead a little bit as you grow together with someone else in the journey.

May I encourage you to make a choice here? A specific step?

Either find a person that you can invest a bit of your life into to aid them in the basics of the Christian life... OR ... perhaps it's time for you to find someone you respect enough to allow them to invest in you for a few months. Thar ya go.
